Merlin’s Halloween

Mama’s boy.  He’d live in my pocket, if he could.

Its October 31, Halloween in Perth and the magician thinks its time…

What, is Halloween …. without a cat?!  Merlin wormed his way in. Again.  He is clever like that. As though he has some magic spells he weaves, that enchants his little servants.

Halloween Theme Artworks

I’ve had time to create some other artworks for the Halloween theme.

Another stroll with the kids to the park.  We call it  “The Beyond.”  Its filled with green swamp and scary trees, its perfect.

I’ve been trying to practice with the ipad, apps, and editing programs.  And, with a bit of ‘playing’  with digital enhancements and vignettes,  I created a darker and more haunting atmosphere.

Merlin, Was Over Seeing

This is a combination of a painting and photo of the swamp trees.

Just for fun.

Abstract Art

The Beyond, in High Key  (c) debiriley.com

High key, abstract acrylic on canvas.

Blue and green swirls, drips and tangles “suggest” the the deep swamps.

Yes,  …. I’m still on my Yugen fling.

The deliberate choice to make the piece High Key, with a dominance of Lights serves to keep the image light and breezy.  Not dark and foreboding.

There’s still a hint of swamp like entanglements…. to make me think of the bayou. But just, in bright sparkling daylight.

The joy of the Light was a welcome relief, after all this dark and gloomy!

Merlin wishes all a safe and Happy Halloween.

      1. Lol. I don’t have photos! They are too big now, but when they were babies…yup. Now I just figuratively put them there.

  3. Hi Debi!

I am thoroughly enjoying your blog posts. I have worked in acrylics only, not yet in watercolors – although I have Bought some (recommended by you) – being inspired by what you have done.

I have a question for you. I work on an iPad and have several photo and art apps that allow me to manipulate Some digital art I’ve created, and some photos I have taken. You have mentioned that you sometimes use such apps to manipulate your photos or art – could you let me know which apps you use? I’d like to expand my options, if possible.

Thanks! Annie PS: I understand if you don’t wish to share which apps you use – I get that! No worries!

      1. Thanks, Debi! I didn’t have Snapseed – but do have iPhoto and Procreate and photoblend. I cannot find Intensify – maybe something to do with my iPad, I don’t know.
Your posts have encouraged me to try my watercolors – don’t know why I fear them! I’ve bought watercolors (recommended by you) and different types of paper (again, at your recommendation) – so what is there to lose? Worse thing that can happen is that I now have colored paper that I can tear up for collages!
I do enjoy Procreate. There are lots of tutorials on youtube for it, if you haven’t found them yet. There is also a FB group for iPad artists, and you just have to ask to join, and you are in. Lots of great artists there – although I must admit I am partial to abstracts. (Maybe become I’m not so good at realism! LOL)
Thanks, again. I too, love the teals, cobalts, some rusts to highlight. And very into Zen.

      3. Hi Debi!

I downloaded Snapseed, and have started playing with it – but I think I’ll look for a tutorial on it – maybe on youtube?

Yes! I remember you mentioning that watercolor paper can be rinsed off – so I could start over. It is just my own Fears of “failure” – which is ridiculous, I know – for heaven’s sake – I’m 64 years old! And Lord knows I’ve made My share of mistakes, failures, whatever. Working with digital art apps, I discard more than I save. I just have To DO IT! EEEK! I’m guessing that I have an expectation of myself being able to produce those lovely flowers And landscapes and such, and they won’t look as good as others. How silly of me!

Thanks for the info – I’ll keep reading your blog and will either post a comment or write you like this. I’m trying to Start a blog myself – not sure I have anything worthwhile to say, but what the heck?

      4. hi Annie, i think you’ll have alot of fun with snapseed. i found it easy, i don’t use PS anymore – in the way too hard basket now. it does seem like ‘everyone else’ is doing it ‘better’! but, they had to start. from scratch too. 🙂 we will, see improvements in our efforts with time! 🙂 have fun, and just …. play.
