Why Does The Rose Cry, Mommy?

Sometimes we need to look at the world around just as the children do.

With all expectancy and filled with the never ending curiosity and those ceaseless questions of “Why?”

The Rose Cries

After The Rains

When my two were little more than toddlers, I began taking them outdoors for short nature walks.

Just around the house or gardens. Looking for squirrels, rabbits, deer, butterflies, flowers in bloom. Yes, worms…. when the pickings were slim!

One day after a solid week of rain, the sun showed its face in the afternoon.

I bundled the two up, slapped their boots on and out we went.  Quickly.

There along the fence,  our lovely climbing roses looked just a bit weather bedraggled. Rain drops were dripping down the petals.

The older one piped up and asked,  “Why does the rose cry, Mommy?”

For a moment, I was speechless.

What do you say to a 3 year old?!   I explained though  it did look a lot like the rose was crying,  really it was the rain that made it wet. It seemed to satisfy her at the time.

Perhaps I could have said, It was crying for sheer gladness the Sun was peeking out. But, no I stuck to reality.

However,   her words have never left me.  And always right after a rain and I see a rain wet, dripping rose, those words return to my mind.

I wonder …. about the tears of a rose, and “Why does the rose cry, Mommy?”

    1. thank you. I agree.
Many times I look around seeing ‘too-busy, distracted faces. The joy, happiness, imagination and wonder gone. The curiosity ‘worn away’ by life’s many, many challenging rules and people.
I see this every day I step foot into my classroom. And then I share MY curiosity, wonder, imagination, and creativity.
      And hope its enough. 🙂

      1. Well… Every one who has curiosity adds to the ‘bank’, so to speak

I am having this struggle with my 13 year old son. He was immensely curious, and was a voracious reader. Then, he discovered smart phones, PS4 etc etc…

  1. What a breathtaking shot. Another stunner! Oh, that sweet child of yours. Never heard it said that way, but oh so moving. Another HSP? Totally love. Thank you, Debi. I am wishing I were a better painter so that I could abstract these without laughing at the final painting! 💜💜💜

  2. Although this has nothing to do with the beautiful photograph, I have always loved this story from my own daughter when she was very little. I had planted a small flower garden and she had helped me. One flower I had planted was snapdragons. When they bloomed, we went outside to look at them, and she said “Oh mommy, looking at the roaring lions!” I’ve never forgotten that. The wonderful way children have of expressing themselves – sometimes just so perfect. Snapdragons=roaring lions!

  4. Beautiful rose photos and such a lovely story Debi. Out of the mouths of babes comes such insightful surprises. I’m sure that i will see crying roses and roaring lions in the future when I photograph these flowers. Cheers, Beth

  5. Another cute and beautiful thing my daughter said once when she was quite young, was when I had made something new for dinner. She tasted it, then said to me, “It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just that I don’t like the TASTE of it.” I think somehow she felt that might have spared me hurt feelings or something, and I tried very hard not to laugh – it was just so darn adorable!
